Welcome to Early Years at St James
Welcome to your child’s first steps in full time education.
This year continues your child’s development within the 7 areas of the Early Years Curriculum with a particular focus on teaching your child the skills they need to be able to read and write.
Our year is split up into six topics which underpin our indoor and outdoor provision areas. Our provision allows your child to explore new, exciting things and different ways of engaging in their play.
In Early Years our aim is to work closely with parents and support each child in their journey from Early Years to National curriculum. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
Class Information
Please ensure that your child has their PE kits in school for their PE lessons every Thursday. Please ensure your child has their P.E kit in school on this day with their name in each items of clothing.
We do access our outdoor area in all weathers so we ask that your child brings a pair of wellington boots to keep in school so they do not miss any opportunity for outdoor learning.
Supporting your child’s learning
It is essential that children read at home at least four times per week. Regular reading has an enormous impact on children’s learning and confidence across the curriculum. Reading books are changed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Please ensure your child brings in their book bag and reading books to ensure they get a change of books for the week ahead. We have provided Phonics and Reading resources in the documents section that you may find useful.

Tapestry
In our Reception class, teachers use Tapestry to share information about your child’s progress in school. We also invite our families to share photographs of their achievements outside of school. For more information about accessing Tapestry, please contact the school office.
