Phonics, Early Reading and Writing

Successful communicators, readers and writers begin their journey in EYFS.  To give the children the best possible start. In the EYFS we start strong and begin teaching our phonics sessions as soon as the children are in class full time.  Our phonics sessions are taught in groups which are assessed and changed weekly to ensure each child is challenged in their own learning.  As the children progress through the scheme, assessments and grouping meetings are held every 6 weeks to ensure children are being moved on in their learning (children who do not progress are given one-to-one tutoring to keep up with their peers).  A rigorous tracking system allows for immediate identification of children falling behind expected progress and shows the impact of one-to-one tutoring.  Any child can be assessed and moved groups at any time based upon the recommendation of that child’s reading teacher.

To promote an early love of reading, children in EYFS are brought to the library weekly to select a book that they want to read.  Children are introduced to different types of books and are encouraged to bring books from home into class to share with their peers and explain why they like certain books.  These books are displayed on our EYFS Reading Tree.
